• Premiere the only broadcaster to show all 64 matches live in Germany and Austria on pay-TV
• RTL to broadcast no more than 18 FIFA World Cup matches on free-to-air TV
• Chief Sports & New Business Officer, Carsten Schmidt: “The ultimate World Cup coverage – Premiere underscores its position as the number one football channel”

Munich, July 15, 2008. Premiere and RTL are set to work together during the next FIFA World Cup™ to be held in South Africa from 11 June to 11 July 2010. Premiere will be the only broadcaster in Germany and Austria to show all 64 matches live – and, as with the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, the Munich-based pay-TV network will show matches happening at the same time in conference. Premiere is planning to show all World Cup matches in HD quality, guaranteeing an unforgettable live experience for football fans equipped with modern flat-screen TVs and HD receivers.

Up to 18 matches will be shown on the free-to-air station RTL. Nine games for which Premiere granted RTL the free-to-air TV rights as part of this agreement are already guaranteed. The Cologne-based broadcaster has an option on nine further matches. Under the terms of the agreement with Premiere, RTL will show 18 FIFA World Cup matches in Austria live and at the same time as they are aired on pay TV.

Premiere’s Chief Sports & New Business Officer, Carsten Schmidt, says, “With the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa,  Premiere will once again confirm its position as the number one football channel in German-speaking countries. As with the Bundesliga, the UEFA Champions League and, from August 2008, the DFB Cup, Premiere will be the only broadcaster in German-speaking countries to show all the matches and all the goals live, in conference and in the highlights round-up during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa."

When acquiring the rights, Premiere intentionally left open the possibility of cooperation with a free-to-air TV broadcaster. Now that it has concluded an agreement with RTL, Premiere has can offer its subscribers live and exclusive coverage of all the FIFA World Cup matches in unsurpassed HD quality and at the same time achieve a very good business result. Both parties have agreed to keep the details of the agreement confidential.

As Carsten Schmidt says, “It is now certain that 2010 will be yet another year of fantastic live football action for Premiere subscribers. With the ultimate in World Cup coverage, the UEFA Champions League and the complete DFB Cup – Premiere is and will remain one of football’s strongest partners.”
